Errors During Direct Client Installation

 

Below are some error messages you may see when installing the client directly through the Console. The most common reasons for the error are also listed.

Install Failed (Service Failed)

  • XPSP2 firewall is enabled on the target computer (potentially any firewall)
  • File and Printer Sharing is disabled
  • User account attempting to perform the direct install does not have sufficient rights to the target computer (for example, logged in as a local user that doesn’t exist on the target PC.)
  • The target computer is not available on the network; shutdown or rebooting
  • XP computer in a Workgroup with "Simple File Sharing" enabled. Disable Simple File Sharing by selecting Tools | Folder Options | View and deselect the check box.  No reboot is required.
  • Manually typing in the Active Directory (AD) name of the target computer. Neither format “Domain.local/computers/pc” or “LDAP://…” is supported.

Install Failed (File Copy Failed)

  • C$ hidden share doesn’t exist or has been locked down.
  • Specified a hidden administrative share that doesn’t exist by using the Advanced Options button in the Manage Computers dialog.
  • Not enough disk space on the target computer.

Install Failed (Registry Write Failed)

  • A timeout occurred accessing the remote registry. Retry the Direct install.
  • The Remote Registry Service has been stopped or disabled.
  • User account attempting to perform the direct install does not have sufficient rights to the target computer (for example, logged in as a local user that doesn’t exist on the target PC.)

No response (no installation status) when installing the client.

  • The user account attempting the Direct install is a non-admin user.
