I'm trying to install the client (6.0.3) on a few servers running Windows Server 2003. The local firewalls are all disabled on the machines, yet the install fails with the error "Install failed (service failed)." Not sure what's going on here. Any ideas?
Thanks
-Dennis

Here are some possible causes:

  • File and Printer Sharing is disabled
  • Remote registry service is disabled
  • User account attempting to perform the direct install does not have sufficient rights to the target computer
  • The target computer is not available on the network; shutdown or rebooting

Hello,
I confirmed all the criteria you listed. I'm logged in as the domain admin which is the same account I did the other installs with. Still stumped.

Here are some more troubleshooting ideas:

Is the C$ administrative share disabled on the target server?

Check the registry on the Windows 2003 server for the following value; if it exists, the server should be rebooted before attempting the installation again: HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager; value=PendingFileRenameOperations.

Check the root of C: on the server for the presence of either of these files: channeldeploy.sys or prismxl.sys. If they exist at the root, it's another sign that there's an incomplete installation. Try to delete them. If you cannot, reboot the server, then delete them.

Hello,
The C$ is shared. I didn't find a matching key in the registry with the one you described and there's no channeldeploy.sys or prismxl.sys in the C:\.
