Run Command every week

Hi,

Need some suggestions to automate a command run using Prism.

Every week i have to build a update package to install on several machines, this package add some files and deletes one log file.

Now i want to have a command executed automatically on the machines where the log file doesn't exist, because this is the indication that the command needs to be run on the PC and this creates a new log file.

I have the command task in place (assigned as reinstall) and it works but only one time and not every time the machine gets the updated package.

What i'm doing wrong or e need to assign this using a Prism Script file?

In the screenshots I see on Prism's website, I see that there are two extra tabs at the bottom; one for Hardware and one for Software. What needs to happen for me to see those tabs?

Package Dependency

Is their a way to make one package dependent on another? As an example, I have an app written in Java. I'd like to somehow say 'deploy this app, but if Java hasn't been installed, then install that first'. Sure, I could wrap them up as one package, I'd prefer instead to keep them separate so each can be updated independently. I know their's a way to make a package not install if Java isn't there, but how can I make it smarter, to realize it's not installed, so it installs it for me automatically?

homedrive variable

We are using Prism v6.2 and we want to put some configuration data in the users homedrive.

When using the %homedrive% user environment variable in a variable folder the data is installed only for the first user.
We also tried it with a prismvariable containing HKCU\Volatile Environment\Homedrive.
We expect that this will be installed for every user because we are using HKCU.

Can you explain how this works and provide me with a way to handle this.

channel subsccription

We're using Prism v6.2 and use groups to deploy packages.

After reinstalling the OS on a computer (same computername,mac,ip-address) In the subscription file we use name computer using Active Directory name.

What happens is that a new computer object is created in prism with the same name but the assignment to the groups are missing.

Is there a way to avoid this and/or is this solved the later versions of Prism?

Viewing Reports

When trying to view any of the reports in Prsim Deploy ver. 6. I get the message "Security error trying to open reports. Please be sure that the .NET assembly PrismReports.dll has full trust from this machine." After doing the solutions from Article ID 10020 from New Boundary support page, still getting the same error message any ideas?

Client installation issue

Now I am having a problem about client installation.

When I try to install client, I got the error messsage "could not create a temporary copy of the subscription information".

This issue started to happen recently.

Before I could install client software correctly.

The Prism server and Client which had been installed before is working fine now.

Do you have any advice about this?

we want to make computers the same truw our company

so we want to deploy by username and not by computername is this posible in prism deploy to deploy by username so the people in our company have the same software on each computer where this person logs in

licenses ran out?

We have 100 licenses for our two labs and the Prism Console is now reporting that all 100 are used. This does not seem possible given that we have only ~70 machines, so I assume something is awry.

I was made aware of this issue because one of the packages distributed recently did not install on a workstation. The strange thing is that this station has not been re-installed and no new machines have been added for some time since we set up everything. Even stranger is that a package on this same machine was "Completed" with "Success" at 3:48pm on Jan 27th but another at 4:30pm reported that the "Computer not licensed" in the Deployment Alerts log.

How can I find out what computer targets are using the licenses in the Console?

Also, if we initially set up machines with the client but removed them later from the Computers list in Targets, does that automatically remove their usage of a license?

I know it is not possible to use a PWC to modify the local administrator's password but is there any workaround/tool that can do the trick ??

Stop subscription of channel

Hi,

I made a clean install of 7.01 on a different server because the server running 6.03 was a bit shaky. I installed the clients again from the new server and everything works fine. The clients are still subscribing to the old channel. Wouldn’t it be easier to do like below?

Create a package that deletes the registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Lanovation\Prism Deploy\Channels\ChannelSerialNumberThingy

Now I have two keys, one for every channel. If I do run a un-subscribe task it will delete the key pointing to the old server. But is that enough?

Upgrade from v6 to v7

We just upgraded or server to V7 (running the latest 6.x release earlier).

We have severe performance problems, much like those in v5 and later on in early v6. The upgrade feels like a real downgrade.

To be short:
Switching between the tabs "Managed" and "Configuration groups" takes minutes. Really, minutes, +60 seconds. Times two sometimes.

Everything was kind of OK with v6, even though it was no MSSQL-client that got a speeding ticket for running effecient quieries to often. So to speak.

We run MSDE (default) on a decent server (xeon, 1gb ram, scsi-disks, server does ONLY channel-stuff, no .PWC stored here) and it shows no signs of performance problems.

The v7 console is hardly useable if you need to switch views. Running the console in Vmware shows that when switching views the network interface is accessed constantly for a minute or two, but never peaks above 10kb/s.

For the record: 1000 LAN clients, polling time 5 min, single console user logged in and performance problems occur. Only two configuration groups exists.

We have already upgraded a couple of hundred clients, will these still work if we decide to reinstall the server and go back to V6?

For a beta this kind of performance would be acceptable I guess, but we are running v7 "live" now, and it is not beta. What gives?

Creation of printer port

Hi, I am new to this, so sorry if this has been addressed before. I have created a package to deploy Adobe Acrobat 7 on to a machine that has Adobe Acrobat 6 installed. Part of the process to install is the uninstall of the previous version which is handled by the newer version. However, during the uninstall it pulls the printer port assignment and after the package has been run, the printer is installed but is shown off-line and this is due to the non-existent port. Am I missing something in this process? the OS's involved are Windows 2000 and Windows XP Pro with latest Service Packs installed. Thanks!

Packages run Hardware Installer?

I want to display automatically the last username logged in the category description.

I need to know rapidely which user has which computer.

Prism Server service keeps falling over

Hi,

We've had Prism Deploy 6.0.2 for a few months now and all has been fine. That is until yesterday. I found the Prism Server service had stopped. I looked in the event log and it just said the service had entered the stopped state.

So I tried to start it again only to find that a few seconds later it had entered the stop state again.

I found in the application log there are a lot of MSSQLSERVER events with the id 17055.

The errors read as follows:

17052 :
This SQL Server has been optimized for 8 concurrent queries. This limit has been exceeded by 2 queries and performance may be adversely affected.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

The frequency of these error messages varies greatly. From between a few seconds to ten minutes. Also the number which it says has been exceeded by changes. So the 2 has been anywhere up as many as 19.

I found by restarting the SQL services I was able to get back into the console. But performance is very slow. Taking about 20-30 seconds before tasks are added to machines.

Any help on this would be great.

problem with licenses

i have 300 licenses.

I have 250 computers in use but my number of licences in use is 300 and i can't install new computer with prism.

I don't understand.I have uncheck the cases licensed on all computer in the console but nothing, i have still 300 licences in use.

please help me !

Last poll date

What does it mean if some workstations have an "attended" status in the console, and I can see their properties, etc. But, the last poll date is many weeks ago?

Assign tasks without the console

We're looking to create some webforms that would allow users to assign inventory scan jobs to workstations. These scans run fine as tasks from the Prism console, but instead of having users have to use the console, I'm wondering if there is a way to assign a task without the console.

The IIS server hosting these forms is located on our Prism server. Is there any way to have IIS automatically assign tasks to the Prism engine. Perhaps PDConsole.exe or PDServer.exe can except command lines? Or, is there an API I can access via scripting? I would imagine this could be accomplished by direct manipulation of the Prism database, but I'd like to avoid that if possible for obvious reasons.

Packaging best practice

Hi

I have a question regarding best practice when it comes to packaging software especially MS Office. I have deployed Office 2000 using prism to run a command on the client PC to install an MSI from a shared location. It seems to work fine but I am aware of the problems you can have later when a user tries to run something that has been specified to install on first use and the PC cannot find the original MSI. How does a package handle this ? If I package Office and specify some components to install on first use what happens when the user goes to run this component ? Am I better off using MSI's as I have been for Office 2000 and Outlook 2003 or should I package. I find the deployment kits that MS provide fairly useful.

Some configuration groups wont display reports

Some of out configuration groups do nothing when I right click on the group and try to select any type of report. The mouse cursor turns into an hourglass for a second, then nothing happens, a report never opens.

I have noticed that this happens for several groups. With other groups, if I do the same thing, the report does come up, even if empty.

Is this expected behaviour? It's not producing anything in the Windows event logs. Could this be related to the issue we found in my previous post "Server Error Message" ? We are running build 6.0.1

Windows File Protection (I think)

I have created Win 2K and XP packages for an application called QuickTest Professional 8.0.

After deploying the completed packages I get an error that says Windows files have been replaced with unknown versions...these files are needed to ensure stability...retry...cancel...ok...insert windows 2000 or windows xp disk (depending on the OS). I am paraphrasing the error message but I can get the exact message if neccessary.

I am assuming this has something to do with Windows File Protection.

Server Error Message

We're suddenly getting a error message when we try to modify or create new configuration groups. It only seems to happen on about half of them, but it seems randome. The message is a dialog box that says:

Server error: fdn0fileserv02 Channel: fdn Row:0 Source: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server Description: Subquery returned mor than 1 value. The is not permitted whn the subquery follows =, !=, <, <=, >, >= or when the subquery is used as an expression. Help File:L Help Context:0 GUID: 0C733063-2A1C-11C-ADE5-00AA0044773D

The error occurs, for example when I edit the rule <File Version> "C:\Program Files\Symantec_Client_Security\Symantec AntiVirus\vpc32.exe" >= 9.0.0.0 by modifying its path.

Any ideas?

Temporarily elevate logged in user to administrator

I need to install a package as the user and the user must have administrative rights. I know I can use the settings in prism deploy to run as another user. My problem is that the application must be installed as the user and in order to install the program correctly they must be an administrator. Just in case you are wondering the application is Interwoven’s MailSite client for document management integration into Outlook.

Pull data from the Prism SQL Database

We have an in house helpdesk database (access) that has user and computer information. Here we keep everything from user location, extension to all of their Workstation info and history.

We would like to pull the information that Prism says is installed on a computer. We would like to do a SQL query by computer name from our access database to return this information.

Nmber of Licenses in use

I'm having a little concern with our currently use licenses in Prism Deploy 6.

We're currently near our 300 licenses limit and I was trying to do some cleanup in our Domain server, deleting old computer entry which are not used anymore. So what I did was to delete them in Active Directory and also in Prism Deploy. But to my surprise the number of licenses in use doesn't change.

So my question is: How do I update the prism database so that my licenses in use is "updated" with the "true" number of pc currently being managed by Prism ?

SQL Databases Created...

First, I'd like to say thank you. We just upgraded from 5 to 6.01 and 6.01 is really nice!

When I installed version 6, I opted to install the sample channel. Later, I removed the sample channel.

Currently, our SQL Server has three databases created by Prism. Our channel name is 'fdn'.

1. fdn_PD

2. Prism_Deploy_ChannelCreation_A113626F-A41B-4E76-9E7A-0AF116BB5DBF

3. Prism_Deploy_Sample_6DFBBB35-35CF-474C-A95C-0D5129A5AF25

On databases 2 and 3, I've never noticed any SQL locks. Also, database 3 seems to belong to the sample channel which was deleted.

So, the question is, can I delete either database 2 or 3 or both? Are databases not automatically deleted when a channel is removed?

It seems like database 2 is used like a template for new channels, sort of like MSDB. Is that correct?

Prism package requirements and XP SP2

Hi,

I didn't really research this, but at least on one occasion, a package with OS-requirements set to Windows XP with at least SP1 wouldn't install under XP SP2 claiming that the OS-requirements were not met. After setting its requirements to install on any XP, even without a service pack, it installed with no further ado.

Could this mean that Microsoft changed the way in which it annotates the SP version in the registry?

Resolving Task id from Database

Is there an easy way to resolve the tasknumbers from the database (prism v 6.01)? In order to get an overview like taskname / taskid.

Looking to the registry from the client pc's you see the key

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Lanovation\PictureTaker\Users\<USERNAME>\Channels\<CHANNEL ID>\106] Where 106 = the id of the task.

Looking within the properties of a task I see an ID like 0000059C or 000004F0 or 0000138. These numbers are not 1 on 1 the same comparing with the client registry

Is there a sql statement or such like to use?

Polling Interval for Large Environment

My company is updating to ver. 6 and is going to use it on a global scale. We have over 60 offices and around 5000 machines that will all subscribe to a master Prism server. I currently have the polling interval set for 15 min. Is that to low or should I bump it to 30 or 60 minutes? Are there any white papers that address Prism in a WAN environment and best practices?

I´m trying to use "wake up on lan" in prism 6, we have a secure network with filtering between our subnets and we doesent let ANY traffic pass the router´s. which ports do we need to open to get the "wake up on lan" function to work.

Using remote not local SQL instance during installation

When installing the Prism 6.0 Channel Server on one system and attempting to install the Prism 6.0 database on a remote instance of SQL, the installation may fail during the Channel creation phase. You may see red X’s when the installation attempts to create the necessary database entries and the Quick Start Channel (if selected). The error messages are “installation was not successful” or “unable to create database”.

Big trouble prism deploy console don´t start

Hey New boundary support

We have BIG problems! The Prism deploy console suddenly would not start then I restarted the 2 services: Prism server and PrismXL on the server.

But this did not help much now prism tells me the prism deploy server could not be contacted and then it shows me the picture with select the channel you want to manage and then i choose the only one I have gts but same result. I try to create new channel one, but not possible it says cant connect to prism deploy server. Then I restarted the server and still I can´t connect to the channel. I have 100 clients already subscribed to the channel. What do I do?

Could I take backup of some folders and then reinstall? And are the clients then still subscribing and visible from the console after the reinstall?

I have also emailed a screenshot from one error dealing with prism in the eventlog. This is a big emergency all of our pc´s have to be up and running monday morning.

I really hope you can help me.
