I understand that the amount of data a computer can push and download is depended on it's speed and the network speed, but I find that when trying to update a machine with several dozen updates causes Prism to fail, and that updating several dozen machines with a relatively few number of updates causes Prism to fail. Normally the updates are stuck in a "pending" mode, while others are unable to connect.
Is there an optimal recommended amount of updates to push at any given time?

Prism Patch Manager only allows a set number of patches to install at any given time. The setting can be configured in File | Agent | Settings... on the Transfer tab. If you schedule patches for more than 10 computers (for example), PPM will do them 10 at a time. As soon as the first is done, the 11th will start and so on.
Patches should not be failing because there are too many scheduled at any given time. It might take a little while for all machines to get the patch since there is a queue, but they should all get them without error. Or at least without error due to too much traffic.
Something else to look at is to make sure that PPM is installed on a server class operating system. Workstation OSs only allow 10 concurrent connections, so that could be causing issues as well.
